Radiology and Imaging Specialists Now Offers PEM (Positron Emission Mammography)

Radiology and Imaging Specialists (RIS) is the first in Polk County to offer PEM technology to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The new PEM scanner is a high-resolution breast PET system that shows the location as well as the metabolic phase of cancerous cells. It allows physicians to see cancer as small as a grain of rice and the ability to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions. PEM has three primary benefits for patient care. First, with the PEM scanner physicians can better determine candidates for breast conservation surgery or lumpectomy. Second, knowing the exact location and extent of the cancer guides doctors during surgery and helps assure that they remove all suspicious tissue. And lastly, PEM can be used to monitor treatment or check for recurrence of disease.
